5 Rocket Money Alternatives

By Rob Berger, JD | Last Updated March 11, 2026

Rocket Money is an excellent app for finding and canceling subscriptions, and its bill negotiation feature is genuinely unique. It’s also the only budgeting app that offers a free tier. Like all apps, however, it does have its limitations.

The budgeting features are basic compared to some other budgeting apps. Investment tracking is minimal—you’ll see a net worth number, but nothing close to real portfolio analysis. And the subscription cancellation feature, while clever in theory, doesn’t always work in practice based on my experience.

If you’re looking for an alternative to Rocket Money, here are five options I’ve personally tested and can recommend.

Quick Take: 5 Best Rocket Money Alternatives

My Top 5 Rocket Money Alternatives

1. Monarch Money — Best All-in-One Alternative

Monarch Money is my top pick for anyone looking to move beyond Rocket Money. Monarch gives you the full picture—budgeting, investment tracking, net worth monitoring, subscription alerts, and goal setting in a single, polished app.

I use Monarch with my wife, and the separate-logins-for-couples feature for couples on a budget. You both get full access to the same household data under one subscription. The budgeting tools are substantially more capable than Rocket Money’s—you can set custom categories, use rollover budgets, and see spending by flexible vs. fixed expenses.

Recent additions include an AI assistant that answers questions about your budget and transactions, a receipt scanner that auto-matches purchases, and a bill split feature for group expenses. The Sankey diagram visualization for spending flows is genuinely useful and something no other app in this category offers.

  • App Store Rating: 4.9 (80k reviews)
  • Google Play Rating: 4.8 (19.7k reviews)
  • Platforms: Web, iOS, Android
  • Cost: $99/year ($8.25/mo) — 7-day free trial. Get 50% OFF your first year with code: ROB50
  • Best for: Overall budgeting, couples, subscription tracking, and investment monitoring

Key Features

  • Custom budgets with rollover
  • Subscription tracking with alerts
  • Investment balance & performance tracking
  • Net worth monitoring
  • Sankey spending diagrams
  • Financial goal setting
  • Annual spending planner
  • Separate logins for couples
  • AI Assistant
  • Receipt scanner
  • Syncs with Zillow, Coinbase, Apple Card
  • Calendar budget view
  • Syncs with Amazon and Target purchases

What I Like

  • Robust budgeting features. Custom categories, rollover budgets, and flexible vs. fixed spending.
  • Tracks investments. Portfolio performance tracking with real return data, not just account balances.
  • Separate logins for couples. Both partners get full access under one subscription.
  • Tracks recurring expenses. Subscription detection with payment alerts before charges hit.
  • Excellent reporting. Sankey diagrams, spending trends, and net worth charts provide genuine insight.
  • No ads. Clean experience with no upselling or financial product pitches.

What Could Be Better

  • Investment tracking still in beta. Advanced features like tax-lot and asset allocation analysis aren’t available yet.
  • No free version. Unlike Rocket Money, you can’t use Monarch without a subscription.
  • No bill negotiation. Monarch doesn’t negotiate bills on your behalf.

Verdict: If you want comprehensive financial management, this is the best option available.

2. Quicken Simplifi — Best for Bill Tracking

Built from scratch by the Quicken team (not to be confused with Quicken Classic), Quicken Simplifi has an excellent mobile experience and bill tracking features.

Simplifi’s “Spending Plan” approach is intuitive: it takes your income, subtracts recurring bills and savings goals, and shows you exactly what’s left to spend. No envelope math, no zero-based budgeting methodology to learn. It also finds and tracks your recurring subscriptions, shows a calendar view of upcoming bills, and lets you set category-level watchlists to stay on track.

At $2.99/month for the first year, it’s also significantly cheaper than both Rocket Money Premium and most competitors.

  • App Store Rating: 4.5 (11k reviews)
  • Google Play Rating: 4.3 (4.19k reviews)
  • Platforms: Web, iOS, Android
  • Cost: $2.99/month first year (billed annually), then $5.99/month — 30-day money-back guarantee
  • Best for: Beginners, mobile-first budgeters, and couples sharing a subscription

Key Features

  • Automatic spending plan
  • Subscription & bill tracking
  • Calendar view of expenses
  • Custom watchlists by category
  • Credit score monitoring
  • Savings goals with badges
  • Net worth tracking
  • Refund tracking on returns
  • Move money between accounts
  • Basic investment tracking

What I Like

  • Excellent mobile app. Best-in-class smartphone experience—designed mobile-first.
  • Affordable. At $2.99/mo (first year), it’s one of the cheapest options available.
  • Intuitive spending plan. No budgeting methodology to learn—just income minus bills equals what’s left.
  • Tracks subscriptions. Finds recurring charges and shows upcoming bills on a calendar.
  • Credit score monitoring. Built-in credit tracking that Rocket Money only offers on Premium.

What Could Be Better

  • No free trial. Only a 30-day money-back guarantee (must pay upfront).
  • Annual billing required. No monthly option available.
  • Basic investment tracking. Better suited for beginners than serious investors.

Verdict: Simplifi is the best alternative if you want robust budgeting features, bill tracking and spend planning.

3. Empower — Best Free Alternative

If you’re using Rocket Money’s free tier and don’t want to pay for an upgrade, Empower is the strongest free alternative. Every feature in Empower’s dashboard is completely free: investment tracking, net worth monitoring, retirement planning, cash flow analysis, and a fee analyzer that shows you exactly how much your investment fees are costing you over time.

Empower gives you detailed investment performance data, asset allocation analysis, and a retirement planner powered by Monte Carlo simulations. It’s the tool I recommend most for anyone focused on the investment and wealth-building side of personal finance.

The tradeoff: Empower’s budgeting tools are limited. You can track spending by category, but you can’t set detailed budgets the way you can with Rocket Money, Monarch or Simplifi. And their advisory team will call you about their paid wealth management service—that’s how they keep the product free.

  • App Store Rating: 4.8 (366k reviews)
  • Google Play Rating: 3.2 (29.2k reviews)
  • Platforms: Web, iOS, Android
  • Cost: Free (all dashboard features). Optional investment advisory at 0.89% AUM.
  • Best for: Investment tracking, retirement planning, and net worth monitoring

Key Features

  • Investment performance tracking
  • Asset allocation analysis
  • Net worth monitoring & trending
  • Retirement planner (Monte Carlo)
  • Investment fee analyzer
  • Cash flow & spending tracking
  • Bill due date alerts
  • Savings planner
  • Debt paydown planner
  • Business expense tracking

What I Like

  • Completely free. No premium tier, no feature gating—everything is included.
  • Best-in-class investment tracking. Holdings, performance, allocation, and fee analysis.
  • Retirement planner. Monte Carlo simulations with scenario modeling
  • Net worth trending. Historical charts showing your wealth trajectory over time.
  • Investment fee analyzer. Shows you exactly how much fees are costing you over decades.

What Could Be Better

  • Limited budgeting tools. Can’t set category-level budgets—spending tracking only.
  • Advisory calls. Their wealth management team will reach out periodically.
  • Can’t manually add cash transactions. Only tracks linked accounts.

Verdict: Empower is the best free financial dashboard available. If you want investment tracking and retirement planning without paying a dime, there is no better option.

4. Origin — Most Comprehensive Financial App

Origin goes further than any other app on this list. It combines budgeting, investment tracking, tax filing, estate planning (wills and trusts), high-yield savings, and access to Certified Financial Planners—all in one platform.

The AI assistant, Sidekick, can answer questions about your finances and help you build a personalized budget. Stock option tracking (RSUs, ISOs, NSOs) makes it especially strong for tech workers and startup employees. And the life-event forecasting lets you model scenarios like buying a home, having children, or retiring early.

  • Platforms: Web, iOS, Android
  • Cost: $99/year ($8.25/mo) or $12.99/month — 7-day free trial. Limited-time: get one year for just $1.
  • Best for: Complete financial management including taxes, estate planning, and professional advice

Key Features

  • Budgeting with AI (Sidekick)
  • Investment & stock option tracking
  • Tax filing (Federal & State)
  • Estate planning (wills & trusts)
  • CFP access ($119/session)
  • High-yield savings account
  • Subscription tracking
  • Credit score monitoring
  • Scenario forecasting
  • Curated stock bundles & auto-investing
  • Separate logins for couples
  • Goal tracking

What I Like

  • True all-in-one platform. Budgeting, investing, taxes, and estate planning under one roof.
  • Stock option tracking. RSU, ISO, and NSO tracking with tax implications—invaluable for tech workers.
  • AI assistant (Sidekick). Natural language questions about your finances and budget.
  • Access to human CFPs. Real financial planning support when you need it.
  • Life-event forecasting. Model home purchases, children, retirement, and more.

What Could Be Better

  • Pricey at $12.99/month. Among the most expensive options (though $99/year is competitive).
  • No free version. 7-day trial only.
  • Investment tracking not as deep as Empower. Good but not best-in-class for portfolio analysis.

Verdict: Origin is the Swiss Army knife of financial apps. If you want one tool for everything—budgeting, investing, taxes, estate planning—this is the one.

5. YNAB (You Need a Budget) — Best for Pure Budgeting

If budgeting discipline is what you’re really after and Rocket Money’s basic budget tools weren’t cutting it, YNAB is the gold standard for zero-based budgeting. Its “give every dollar a job” philosophy has genuinely changed how hundreds of thousands of people think about money.

YNAB forces intentionality: every dollar of income gets assigned to a category before you spend it. It’s the envelope budgeting method, digitized. For people who commit to the system, the results are often dramatic—YNAB claims the average new user saves $600 in their first two months and more than $6,000 in the first year.

The downsides: YNAB is expensive at $109/year for a single-purpose budgeting tool. It doesn’t track investments, manage subscriptions, monitor your credit score, or calculate net worth. And there’s a real learning curve. But if budgeting behavior change is your primary goal, nothing beats YNAB.

  • Platforms: Web, iOS, Android
  • Cost: $109/year (~$9/month) or $14.99/month — 34-day free trial
  • Best for: Zero-based budgeting enthusiasts who want behavioral change around spending

Key Features

  • Zero-based / envelope budgeting
  • “Give every dollar a job” methodology
  • Budget category management
  • Goal setting & tracking
  • Calendar view
  • Future bill planning
  • 34-day free trial
  • Strong user community & education

What I Like

  • Best budgeting methodology. Zero-based budgeting that genuinely changes spending behavior.
  • Long free trial. 34 days to test the system—longest trial in the category.
  • Strong community. Active user forums, education resources, and support.
  • Proven results. Users consistently report significant savings after adopting the method.

What Could Be Better

  • No investment tracking. Budgeting only—no portfolio or net worth features.
  • No subscription management. Can’t find or cancel recurring charges.
  • Expensive for a single purpose. $109/year for budgeting alone is steep.
  • Steep learning curve. Takes time and commitment to fully adopt the methodology.

Verdict: YNAB is the best pure budgeting tool available. If changing your spending habits is the goal, the methodology is proven—but it asks for commitment.

Final Thoughts

Rocket Money is a good app for what it does—finding subscriptions, negotiating bills and basic budgeting. But if you are looking for different features, the tools above offer unique features. Each serves a different need, so the right choice depends on what matters most to you:

My Picks:

  • Want the best all-around upgrade? Go with Monarch Money. It does everything Rocket Money does (except bill negotiation) and adds real budgeting, investment tracking, and couples features.
  • Want a beautiful, simple app that’s affordable? Try Quicken Simplifi. Best mobile experience, easy spending plan approach, and under $3/month the first year.
  • Don’t want to pay anything? Empower is 100% free and has the best investment tracking and retirement planning tools available.
  • Want one app for your entire financial life? Origin covers budgeting, investing, taxes, and estate planning in one platform.
  • Serious about changing your spending habits? YNAB’s zero-based budgeting methodology is proven—just be ready to commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free alternative to Rocket Money?

Empower is the best free alternative. Its dashboard includes investment tracking, net worth monitoring, retirement planning with Monte Carlo simulations, and cash flow analysis—all completely free. Rocket Money’s free tier is limited to basic subscription detection, while Empower gives you full access to every feature.

Is Monarch Money better than Rocket Money?

Yes and no. Monarch Money offers substantially better budgeting tools, investment tracking, net worth monitoring, and couples collaboration in my opinion. Rocket Money is better if subscription cancellation and bill negotiation are your primary needs. It’s also better if you are looking for a free plan. See my full Monarch Money vs Rocket Money comparison for details.

What if I mainly want subscription tracking?

Both Monarch Money and Simplifi detect and track recurring subscriptions. However, Rocket Money is the only app that offers one-tap cancellation and bill negotiation. If those features are essential, Rocket Money may still be your best option for subscriptions specifically—you can use it alongside a more capable budgeting app like Monarch.

Is Rocket Money’s bill negotiation worth the fee?

Rocket Money charges 35–60% of your first year’s savings for successful bill negotiations. Results are mixed—the service doesn’t always succeed, and when it does, you may be giving up more than half your savings for a year. For many users, calling providers directly (or using a tool like Origin that includes financial advisor access) is a more cost-effective approach.

Can I use Rocket Money alongside another budgeting app?

Absolutely. A popular approach is to use Rocket Money’s free tier specifically for subscription tracking and cancellation, while using Monarch Money or another app as your primary budgeting and financial management tool. This gives you the best of both worlds without paying for Rocket Money Premium.
