I travel throughout the year and VPN service is the first item on my packing list. I wouldn’t use an airport or hotel WiFi without my VPN turned on. My personal favorite is ExpressVPN, as you’ll see below. But any of the options below are solid, low-cost options.
Note: I’ve personally used each VPN service listed below.
Best VPN Services for Traveling
1. ExpressVPN
When traveling, the two key VPN features are speed and streaming service. I’ve used ExpressVPN for years. It’s inexpensive, extremely easy to use, and works with every streaming service I’ve tried (Netflix and YouTube TV are the two I use the most).
As for speed, what I look for are the VPN’s server locations. I want a lot of options in the U.S. and in countries where I’ll be traveling. In the U.S. ExpressVPN has 63 locations, so speed is never an issue. It also has VPN services in 105 countries, which should cover just about any trip you take.

For a few extra dollars a month, ExpressVPN also offers a dedicated IP address. This is an IP address exclusive to you, which reduces the chance the VPN service will not work with some websites and streaming services. I’ve never needed a dedicated IP address, but it’s a good option to have just in case.
2. Surfshark
Surfshark is the least expensive option I’ve found. Its speed is excellent in the tests I’ve run. It offers a dedicated IP address for an extra fee, and it’s very easy to use.

I’ve run several streaming services with Surfshark without issue. With Netflix it does ask if you are traveling, which is true with any VPN service I’ve tried. But it works fine.
ProtonVPN
Proton is company based known for securing its user’s data. It offers encrypted email, encrypted cloud document storage, encrypted password manager, and very secure VPN service.
Its VPN service stands out for for travelers for several reasons:
- Servers are located in 129 countries;
- Over 2,600 servers in the U.S. alone; and
- Works with Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and other streaming services.
